  • The Introduction

1.

(Quote 1):

"But the object that most drew my attention to the mysterious package was a certain affair of fine red cloth, much worn and faded. There were traces about it of gold embroidery, which, however, was greatly frayed and defaced; so that none, or very little, of the glitter was left. It had been wrought, as was easy to perceive, with wonderful skill of needlework; and the stitch (as I assured by ladies conversant with such mysteries) gives evidence of a now forgotten art, not to be recovered even by the process of picking out the threads." (pg. 296)

1.

Explanation:

This quotation relates to chapter 2 when the the narrator is observing the letter "A" on Hester's dress. The fantastically embroidered letter is the significant symbol of Hester's sinfulness actions. Hester wears it in such a flaunting manner and the letters delicacy seems to show that she is proud rather than abashed of her sin. Hester accepts the "sin" and its symbol as part of herself.

2.

(Quote 2):

"While thus perplexed- and cogitating, among other hypotheses, whether the letter might not have been one of those decorations which the white men used to contrive, in order to take the eyes of Indians- I happened to place it on my breast. It seemed to me- the reader may smile, but must not doubt my word- it seemed to me, then, that I experienced a sensation not altogether physical, yet almost so, as of burning heat; and as if the letter were not of red cloth, but red-hot iron. I shuddered, and involuntarily let it fall upon the floor." (pg. 297)

2.

Explanation:

This quotation shows how the the burning sensation that Nathaniel felt as he put the letter to his chest had a deep meaning in it which affected him emotionally. The letter was communicating itself to his emotions and it assaulting the examination of his mind. This quotation relates to the beginning chapters in the novel in which we see how "evil" the letter really was.

3.

(Quote 3):

"In absorbing the contemplation of the scarlet letter, I had hitherto neglected to examine a small roll of dingy paper, around which it had been twisted. This I now opened and had the satisfaction to find, recorded by the old Surveyor's pen, a reasonably complete explanation of the whole affair. There were several foolscap sheets, containing many particulars respecting the life and conversation of one Hester Prynne, who appeared to have been rather noteworthy personage in the view of our ancestors." (pg. 297)

3.

Explanation:

We predict that this quote will relate entirely to the end of the novel because, the whole story will end up relating back to the true documents of Hester's experiences in which the Surveyor Pue discovered.

  • Chapter 1

The title of chapter one is, "The Prison." The title of this chapter could be related to the Scarlet Letter because the scarlet A that Hester is forced to wear on her chest each and every day is saying, "I am a sinner" and "look down on me, for I am not as good as you." When people are sent to jail, or prison for committing crimes, big or small, that is something they must live with. It is a title they are given. You have heard people talk about their mother or father, friend, or sibling being in jail and a lot of times people that have not had to deal with that in their family or outside their family, do not know how to react or handle that. There are stereotypes made against almost anyone who has spent time in prison. They just get treated differently, just like Hester. There is no escaping prison or the names, stereotypes, and treatment that come with it. Especially the evidence is posted right there, everyday, all day, on Hester's chest.

Rumors: By Lindsay Lohan

http://www.dilandau.com/download_music/lindsay-lohan-rumors-1.html#0

Saturday steppin' into the club
I feel the energy all around
And my body can't stop moving to the sound
But i can tell that you're watching me
And you're probably gonna write what you didn't see
Well, I just need a little space to breathe
Can you please respect my privacy

Why can't you just let me do
The things I wanna do
I just wanna be me

I don't understand

Why would you wanna bring me down
I'm only having fun
I'm gonna live my life (but not the way you want me to)

[chorus]

I'm tired of rumors starting

I'm sick of being followed
I'm tired of people lying
Saying what they want about me
Why can't they back up off me
Why can't they let me live

I'm gonna do it my way
Take this for just what it is

Here we are, back up in the club
People taking pictures
Don't you think they get enough
I just wanna be all over the floor
And throw my hands up in the air to a beat like (what)
I've gotta say respectfully
I would love it if you would take the cameras off of me
Cause I just want a little room to breathe
Can you please respect my privacy

Why can't you just let me do
The things I wanna do
I just wanna be me
I don't understand why
Would you wanna bring me down
I'm only having fun
I'm gonna live my life (but not the way you want me to)

[chorus]

I'm tired of rumors starting
I'm sick of being followed
I'm tired of people lying
Saying what they want about me
Why can't they back up off me
Why can't they let me live
I'm gonna do it my way
Take this for just what it is

I just need to free my mind (my mind)
Just wanna dance and have a good time (good time)
I'm tired of rumors (rumors)
Followed (followed, followed, followed, followed, followed)
What they want of me
Why can't they (they, they, they, they, they) let me live
Take this for just what it is
[chorus] ×2

I'm tired of rumors starting
I'm sick of being followed
I'm tired of people lying
Saying what they want about me
Why can't they back up off me
Why can't they let me live (live)

I'm gonna do it my way
Take this for just what it is

The women standing in front of the prison door gossiped about how terrible Hester Prynne's sin was. Many crude statements were said about Hester, and many of the women believed that,"she had ought to die since she has brought shame upon them all."In this this song by Lindsay Lohan, it resembles how the women gossiped about Hester and her sin. Hester at first just "wanted her privacy," and wanted "people to back off,and let her live the way she wants to,"just like in this song. When Hester revealed herself before the crowd many were shocked, "those who had before known her, and expected to behold her dimmed and obscurred by a disastrous cloud, were astonished, and even startled, to perceive how her beauty was shown out and made a halo of the misfortune and ignominy in which she was enveloped."At the end of the song it says, "I'm going to do it my way, take this for just what it is", this part in the song shows how she finally had enough courage to accept her actions, and how she no longer cared about how others thought of her.

rec·og·ni·tion

–noun

1. an act of recognizing or the state of being recognized.

2. the identification of something as having been previously seen, heard, known, etc.

One interpretation of the title, The Recognition, is when Hester spots her husband, that she hasn't seen for many years, out in the crowd. She recognizes him right away because of his unique stance. Seeing him puts her into shock and she is very humiliated standing there on the platform. The second interpretation, is when Hester realizes what kind of life she is having to lead with her daughter, Pearl. They both get judged everywhere they go and Hester feels that they are living in shame. The last interpretation, is when Hester realizes, as she is standing up in front of the whole crowd of people, how harmful her sin truly is and how much people judge her for it. I think standing in front of the crowd, and getting yelled at and very close to jail is when Hester's sin becomes real, for the first time.

  • Chapter 6

The flower is the symbol we chose to represent Pearl. She is compared to a flower in the story itself, "a lovely, and immortal flower." The narrator speaks of how Hester watches her daughter grow every day more beautiful and brilliant. Pearl's character has said to have been a beautiful flower growing out of sinful soil. Even though she was born into critical and unhealthy circumstances, she is intelligent and strong against the harsh words of the children and adults in the community when she is actually around them. Pearl may have been grown from the soil of sin, but she is continuous growing up, up, and up, over the harsh words and actions forced by society onto herself and her mother Hester.

  • Chapter 7

"Thou must gather thine own sunshine. I have none to give thee." This quote relates to the relationship between Hester and her daughter Pearl because even though Pearl is Hester's most treasured possession, and she loves her with all her heart, she knows that the birth of her daughter was wrong, and not ideal. Hester would not trade her daughter's lives for anything, but that adds to her pain. The pain of being alone, cut off from the society. The stares and harsh words and actions from the adults and children towards her daughter and herself are just too much. Depression has a lot to do with the feelings of being hopeless and helpless. It is the profound feeling of despair. Hester loves her daughter and wants her to be happy, but she is telling her that Pearl needs to go out and find her own happiness because she does not have any to offer her. All Hester has to offer is sadness and loneliness. She does not want her daughter to be swallowed into her depression, so she tells Pearls that she will have to find her own happiness, her own sunshine.

  • Chapter 8

We have very many reasons to believe why Hester would be an unfit mother. She may have those moments when she doesn't act very motherly. But other than that I believe she is a very fit and good mother.

Her daughter, Pearl, is born not knowing who her father is. And this is due to Hester's bad decision. But Pearl is her mother’s pride and joy. You can tell Hester would do just about anything for her daughter to keep her safe and well. But the reason Hester may be seen as an unfit mother to others is because their opinions are probably based on the Puritans strict society. But Hester doesn't let the others opinions get in her way. She never gives up, and does what she has to do in order to stay with Pearl and give her guidance. And although she doesn't quite see it, she has Dimmesdale backing her up in everything she is going for. You can tell that he too, believes Hester is a fit mother. Although he doesn't let her or the others around him know that.

Momma Mia is the movie we chose to represent the relationship between Reverend Arthur Dimmesdale and Doctor Roger Chillingworth. This movie fits perfectly for their relationship, and for The Scarlet Letter novel as a whole. Momma Mia is about a young girl who is soon to be married but has no father to walk her down the aisle. Her mother refuses to talk to her about who her father is, so being nosy, Sophie Sheridan, daughter and soon to be bride, snoops through her mother's diary to find there are a possible 3 men that could be her father! Without telling her mother she invites the 3 men to the Sheridan's home days before the wedding, expecting to be able to pick out her father instantly. When the 3 men get to the house, they are confused as to why they are all there. They do not know a thing about each other or the fact that all three of them at one point slept with Sophie's mother, Donna Sheridan. Just as Dimmesdale and Chillingworth both have secrets hidden from each other and society that both lead back to the same woman, the men in this movie are unaware that the fact that each of them has slept with the same woman, Donna, and could possibly be the father of her child.

http://www.cnn.com/2010/SHOWBIZ/celebrity.news.gossip/09/18/lindsay.lohan.drugs/index.html?iref=allsearch

For the latest news on Lindsay Lohan, watch HLN's live at 11am ET on Monday.
Los Angeles, California (CNN) --Lindsay Lohan acknowledged through Twitter postings Friday night that she failed a recent drug test, but the actress said she's "working hard to overcome" her drug addiction.Lohan's supervised probation for a 2007 drunken driving conviction requires frequent drug tests. The judge warned her last month any failure could send her back to jail.
"Regrettably, I did in fact fail my most recent drug test and if I am asked, I am prepared to appear before judge Fox next week as a result," Lohan tweeted Friday evening.
She spent 23 days in a court-ordered drug rehab program last month, which followed a 13-day jail stint imposed when a Los Angeles judge ruled that Lohan violated her probation.
Judge Elden Fox, who took over Lohan's case when she was released, imposed a new set of rules for her to follow until November. It included weekly counseling sessions for alcohol and drug rehab, random drug tests and behavioral therapy.
Lohan's lawyer did not respond to CNN requests for comment Friday. A spokesman for the Los Angeles County district attorney also declined to comment.
No new court date has been announced for Lohan to face Judge Fox concerning the failed drug test.
"Substance abuse is a disease, which unfortunately doesn't go away overnight," Lohan tweeted. "I am working hard to overcome it and am taking positive steps."
Lohan tweeted that she was "doing what I must do to prevent any mishaps in the future."
"This was certainly a setback for me, but I am taking responsibility for my actions and I'm prepared to face the consequences," she tweeted.
Lohan made fun of her substance abuse troubles in a backstage skit broadcast during last Sunday's MTV Video Music Awards.
She appeared with show host Chelsea Handler, who was wearing an alcohol-detection bracelet like the one Lohan recently wore.
"Wake up, Handler, pull it together," Lohan said as she slammed Handler against a wall. "You're a menace. Do you think anyone will work with a drunk? Take it from me, they don't."

On September 19th, Lindsay Lohan says, “She is working hard to overcome her latest drug addiction.” She finally admits to her addiction and she says she, “is doing everything she can do to over come it.” She has taken responsibility for her actions and she is prepared to face the consequences. She still feels like everyone is out to get her according to the latest articles about her in the news. This situation relates to the quote in The Scarlet Letter, “To the untrue man, the whole is false – it is palpable – it shrinks to nothing within his grasp. And he himself, in so far as he shows himself in a false light, becomes a shadow, or, indeed, ceases to exist.” We think this mainly means that, when were being untrue to ourselves, everything in the world feels as if it’s untrue, and we can’t have closure. As long as we are true to ourselves everything in the world will feel right.

"The Scarlet Letter Thug Life Rap"

A women named Hester was walking down the street
When a Rev named Dimmesdale asked her for a peek

Didn’t know she was married when they hopped in the bed
Now’s she’s walking round sportin an A in red

9 months later gave birth to a girl
She was so precious Hester named her Pearl

The ladies talking trash always putting her down
but they went to Hester when their babies needed gowns

Some called it a sin,
Some called it a curse no one new that her husband was Chillingworth.

Some just didn’t know quite how to feel
Hester’s only relief was with pins and needles

But she held her head high as she walked through town.
And soon enough all the goons stopped putting her down.

Soon enough the letter meant something more able and angel is what the a stood for she was scared and unsure for pears upcoming life never wanted her to live how she did and pay that price.

The people of Boston changed their views but there was one man too afraid to tell the truth, which only led to making Hester stronger an A+ momma

  • Chapter 18

After the point where Arthur Dimmesdale and Hester Pryne speak in the woods, and after Dimmesdale presents himself on the platform that Hester suffered upon, he was like a changed man. The conversation and information that he got from Hester about her husband and such were hurtful, but served as a sense of closure for Dimmesdale. In the 1600's it was only proper to call adults by their last name, often as we do today, but the first name was only to be mentioned if you were a close friend or family member of the person. After Arthur goes through these emotional changes in heart and soul, he is like someone new and we as readers feel as though we can relate to him in some ways, which naturally makes us feel like we know Arthur as a character and person better. So Hawthorne begins to call Dimmesdale by his first and last name, Arthur Dimmesdale.

  • Final Assignments

The reasoning for Hawthorne choosing to have the main character’s baby, Hester’s baby Pearl , be a girl instead of a boy is because naturally females are more quickly and easily judged. They also seem to be more worth fighting for in this time period, especially by a mother. It would have been interesting to see the changes in the novel if the baby would have been a male child. Also it made more sense to have Pearl be Pearl because there are names that would fit for girl children better that represent treasures and prizes. Like Pearl, or Ruby. There also may have been specific reasoning behind the name Pearl to Hawthorne personally.
Dimmesdale committed the biggest sin here. Even though he eventually owns up, it takes two to tango, and just because Hester had to have the evidence under her dress, Dimmesdale should have been a man and owned up to everything as soon as Hester had to up on the scaffold. He could have been free from sin and his bad conscious, and saved Hester and his child from a lot of hurt and negative attention. If he did it for anyone he should of done it for Pearl. Her life is not the same and will never be because of the horrible attention she got from her mother’s mistake years ago. Not only did Dimmesdale commit the sin of adultery, but also the sin of being an irresponsible parent, and lover.
